NURSE

Each of the Littlewoods buildings employed a staff nurse or Matron to maintain the health of the employees. This was essential due to Littlewood's investment in the training of its employees. If a Littlewoods girl was sick or unavailable to work this could have negative repercussions for the marking of an entire building.

The Edge Lane building had a unit with hospital-style bedding which could deal with more serious incidents such as fingers being caught in machinery. This onsite ward reduced the time people took to recover. Moreover, the nursing staff could administer modern pharmaceutical treatments such as painkillers. Nurses would also perform pregnancy tests using urinary samples to ensure potential employees were not pregnant.
