Above All: Inside The Littlewoods Dream Factory

Littlewoods was once the largest family-owned business in the UK, employing over 30,000 women at its peak. From humble beginnings in 1930s Liverpool to an empire of chain stores and Pools factories all over the UK, Littlewoods was truly a household name. Known for the football pools and bringing fortune to thousands of British homes, the company and its founders were also known locally for treating their staff well, providing enriching activities and encouraging community. Using archive images, oral history interviews and in-person conversations, Above All brings stories from Littlewoods workers history to life. This film offers a glimpse into the history of working life in 20th century Britain; through WWII, the entering of women into the workplace en mass and huge advances in technology. Inspired by tales of friendship, family and camaraderie from the workers themselves.

 

This film was commissioned as part of Littlewoods Heritage Project, in partnership with Metal and LJMU’s Screen School, with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. A collaboration with poet Jeff Young and musician Jezebel Halewood-Leagas.
